In Memory of Flavia Idà

Flavia Ida memorial 2022 (blog)

We are saddened to report that author Flavia Idà passed away on November 4, 2022.

Flavia was the author of the novels The Iron and The Loom (Il ferro e il telaio), The Names of Heaven, Children of the Wrong Time (Figli del tempo sbagliato), The Last Speck of the World (L’ultimo granello del mondo), the short story “Mercy“, and provided the translation for Building Baby Brother (Costruendo il fratellino).

Flavia was also known for her work with the Italian Consulate in San Francisco, as a translator. Her passion for the Italian culture, and for helping descendants of Italian immigrants achieve citizenship, was appreciated by many. Her ability to decipher ancient, faded, handwritten documents in the Italian language helped her tell the stories of families broken by immigration, and reunite people with their heritage. Her patience with the panicky nerves and constant checking-and-rechecking of the people going through those processes was legendary, and endlessly appreciated.

She also made a mean tiramisu.

We offer our sincerest condolences to her family and friends, and plan to keep her legacy alive through her stories.

  1. More than just one of our authors, Flavia was also a good friend. She was one of the reasons that Paper Angel Press even began. We worked together on several books, and I am honored and humbled that her last work with us was her translation of my book, “Building Baby Brother”, into Italian (“Costruendo il fratellino”). I will miss her support and humor. She will be missed.

  2. She had a wonderful ability to take a historical environment and seamlessly blend a story within. Read “The Iron and The Loom” and “The Names of Heaven” . They showcase her talents.
